How to reduce data usage on your iPhone

Use Low Data Mode, manage background activity, and review Wi-Fi Assist to make your eSIM data allowance last longer.

Optimizing your iPhone’s data usage can help extend your data plan. Settings vary by iOS version, carrier, and whether you use one or two SIMs.

Enable Low Data Mode

  1. Open Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data.
  2. Select your encryptSIM line. Look for Cellular Data Options or Data Mode, depending on your device.
  3. Enable Low Data Mode.

Low Data Mode reduces background network activity and pauses automatic updates and backups. Some apps may use lower streaming quality.

Review Wi-Fi Assist and backups

Wi-Fi Assist can switch to mobile data when Wi-Fi is weak. Open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data, scroll down, and turn off Wi-Fi Assist if you want to avoid that fallback.

Keep large backups and downloads on Wi-Fi. Review your iCloud Backup settings and disable Back Up Over Cellular if that option is available.

Limit background app activity

Open Settings > General > Background App Refresh and select Wi-Fi, or turn background refresh off for apps you do not need. In Cellular or Mobile Data settings, review which apps are allowed to use mobile data.
